15 On-Screen Couples with Real Chemistry
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, today we’re celebrating love ❤️
How you ask? Why, by taking a look back at 15 on-screen couples where the chemistry was, in fact, so real that it continued off-screen.
Let’s see which TV studios and filmsets Cupid took a little visit to, shall we?
Kit Harrington & Rose Leslie
After meeting on series 2 of Game of Thrones in 2011, real-life John Snow and Ygritte have been inseparable ever since.
The two tied the knot in 2018, had their first son in 2021, and are currently expecting bundle number two!
Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie
Perhaps the most well-known couple to have joined forces after meeting on set: Brangelina.
Whilst filming action comedy Mr & Mrs Smith in 2004, Brad Pitt’s chemistry with on-screen wife, Angelina Jolie, was so powerful that he announced his split with off-screen wife Jennifer Aniston in January of the following year (5 months before the movie was even released in June!).
Natalia Dyer & Charlie Heaton
Debuting as Nancy and Jonathan in Netflix’s Stranger Things in 2016, fans suspected Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton to be a little more than an on-screen monster-slaying duo.
Of course, this was all speculation – up until the two were spotted kissing in public in November 2017 and later made it official with an affectionate red carpet appearance that December!
Jesse Plemons & Kirsten Dunst
Meeting on Season 2 of the FX TV series Fargo, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons started out as fictional high school sweethearts Peggy and Ed Blumquist but continued their romantic relationship even after the cameras stopped rolling.
The couple officially tied the knot off-screen just last year in Jamaica and share 2 sons together: Ennis and James!
Tom Hardy & Charlotte Riley
Tom Hardy met Charlotte Riley way back in 2009 when the two were cast as tragic lovers, Heathcliff and Catherine, in the ITV adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.
Marrying in 2014, the couple have since had 2 children together, and Charlotte is now the loving step-mum of Tom’s oldest son, Louis. Keen TV fans may also have spotted the two have reappeared on-screen together in smash-hit gangster series, Peaky Blinders.
Ashton Kutcher & Mila Kunis
Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis first stole our hearts as feisty, on-again/off-again couple – Jackie & Kelso – in cult comedy series That 70’s Show.
A whole 15 years later, the pair officially got together off-screen and are now happily married with 2 children!
Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan
Dancing together in 2006’s Step Up, it seems that Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan’s on-screen chemistry involved very little acting indeed.
Channing popped the question just 2 years after the film’s release, and welcomed daughter, Everly, a little while later in 2013.
Sadly, the two officially parted ways in 2018 with an online announcement, but still refer to each other sweetly as ‘Two Best Friends‘.
Liam Hemsworth & Miley Cyrus
Before the frosty public break-up that inspired Miley to write and release revenge anthem ‘Flowers‘, Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus spent almost 10 years together – even marrying in 2018 then later divorcing in 2020.
How did their paths cross, we wonder? When playing Will and Veronica in the screen adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ The Last Song (2010), of course.
Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively
After meeting on set of Green Lantern in 2011, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively knew they were twin flames almost instantly, both choosing to leave their respective relationships and pursue a life together.
The two had a surprise wedding in 2012, began a family, and remain deliriously happy – still regularly pranking each other all over social media.
Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn
Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn first met on set of the musical The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1966 – but didn’t get together off-screen until Valentine’s Day 1983!
The two later crossed paths again when cast as married couple Jack and Kay Walsh in the romantic comedy Swing Shift where their chemistry was simply electric. The two have been solid as a rock ever since and remain one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples!
Emma Stone & Andrew Garfield
Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone had a whirlwind 4 year romance following their appearance on-screen as young lovers Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy in Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man.
Despite going their separate ways in 2015 due to hectic work schedules, the two remain great friends and their chemistry continues platonically (at least for now).
Tom Holland & Zendaya
Another Spider-Man love story – this time in the form of Tom Holland and his on-screen counterpart, Zendaya.
After denying rumors of their off-screen romance for a number of years since shooting Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, the two eventually were caught engaging in some curb-side PDA at a stop light in 2021. Busted!
Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes
Whilst the couple have worked hard to keep their private life under wraps, we do know that their romance began when working together on 2012’s The Place Beyond the Pines.
The couple now share 2 daughters, and Eva has since revealed a small dedication to Ryan tattooed on her wrist: the phrase ‘de gosling‘.
Daniel Craig & Rachel Weisz
Despite being friends since university, things didn’t turn romantic for Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz until being cast as married couple Will and Libby Atenton in 2011’s Dream House.
Sparks evidently flew on set as the pair have been happily married since the year of Dream House’s release and had a daughter together in August of 2018.
Lucy Boynton & Rami Malek
The casting team behind Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, did an exceptional job at spotting the chemistry between Rami Malek and Lucy Boynton when searching for a believable Freddie and Mary.
The pair’s off-screen romance was confirmed at the 2019 Palm Springs International Film Festival when Malek dedicated his award for ‘best breakthrough performance’ to Boynton, saying:
“Thank you, Lucy Boynton. You have been my ally, my confidant, you are my love. I appreciate you so much.”
