Understanding Your Profile Measurements :: Uni-versal Extras Blog

Throughout your journey as an Extra, you will be asked to regularly capture and review your measurements.

Measurements are a crucial part of your Extra profile because our casting team require them to match you to roles. In addition to this, productions require them to make sure you arrive to set to a costume that fits!

Long story short, bad costume measurements usually mean no work.

So, to avoid missing out, we’ve put together a guide on everything you’ll need to know to upload correct, accurate measurements to your profile.

You can then refer back to this guide whenever you need to update! How does that sound?

To get started, you’ll need:

Tape Measure | Understanding Measurements :: Uni-versal Extras BlogA tape measure – or – some string and a ruler
Mobile Phone with the UVE Artiste App :: Understanding MeasurementsA mobile phone or tablet with the UVE Artiste App

If you don’t have easy access to a tape measure, never fear.

As a workaround, you can use string (or ribbon, rope – whatever you can get your hands on that is both long and flexible) to measure yourself. Once you’ve done so, pin this string next to a ruler and capture this measurement in either inches or centimetres.

You can then add this to the UVE Artiste App under your profile’s Personal Details section.

At UVE, we will ask you for measurements in relation to your gender identification.

As costume requirements arrive to us exclusively in male or female formats, Non-binary Artistes are asked (at sign-up) to select a measurement style that they would be comfortable submitting for castings. Please note that this does not relate to gender itself, but simply which roles you are happy being considered for.

Now let’s look at how to accurately capture those measurements, shall we?

MALE MEASUREMENTS

MeasurementHow To Measure
HeightTake your shoes off and stand against a flat surface, such as a wall or a door.

Allow your tape measure (or string) to fall from the very top of your head right to your feet, ensuring your feet are flat on the ground.

To avoid having to mark your wall, it’s usually best to ask a friend or family member to help you record this!
Hat SizeWrap your measuring tape around the widest part of your forehead, and record this measurement.
CollarWrap your tape around the base of your neck and close it at the front (where your top button would do up).

At the front, allow space for two fingers to slip easily between your throat and the tape, and this is your collar size.
ChestWrap a measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, under your armpits and across your shoulder blades.
Natural WaistHere we must locate your natural waistline – i.e. the narrowest part of your waist.

Wrap a measuring tape around your waist, and gently pull it taut between the bottom of your ribs and your belly button.
Trouser WaistThis is where you must input the trouser waist size that you most commonly wear.
Inside LegAllow the tape measure to fall down from the crotch to where the trouser hem would sit on your shoe.
Glove SizeWrap a measuring tape around the base of your four fingers, just below the knuckles. (do not include the thumb). Make a loose fist and take this measurement.
Shoe SizeRecord the UK shoe size that you most commonly wear.

Still a little unsure? That’s okay! You can review the below video for guidance…
